ABOUT THE NORTHERN FLOWER STUDIO

Hi, I'm Debbie

I'm the founder of The Northern Flower Studio, a creative floral studio based in Whitburn on the beautiful North East coast.

Many of you may know us as The Northern Flower Garden which has grown from seasonal pop-up flower shops into workshops across the North East, collaborations with the National Trust, and now a permanent studio where I can welcome people to learn, create and celebrate with flowers all year round.

The move to Whitburn marks an exciting new chapter, and The Northern Flower Studio reflects everything the business has become, a welcoming creative space centred around flowers, community and seasonal inspiration.

I've always loved how flowers mark life's special moments. They encourage us to slow down, notice the changing seasons and reconnect with nature. Whether it's creating a wedding bouquet or helping someone make their very first floral arrangement, I love seeing the creativity, joy and confidence that flowers can inspire.

If you'd like to experience the studio for yourself, you can explore more here:

When I'm not in the studio, you'll usually find me walking along the coast with my dogs, taking inspiration from the ever-changing landscape around Whitburn and the North East.

From Pop-Up Shops to Workshops

The Northern Flower Garden began with a simple idea: to share seasonal flowers in a way that felt creative, welcoming and accessible.

What started with small pop-up flower shops soon evolved as I discovered that people weren't just looking to buy flowers—they wanted to learn about them, work with them and experience the joy of creating something themselves.

As demand grew, so did my confidence to develop the business and explore new opportunities. What began as a small venture quickly became a business centred around creativity, community and a genuine love of flowers.

“Thoroughly enjoyed the Kokedama workshop with Debbie and will keep an eye out for more of her workshops.” - Marilyn

“We had an absolutely amazing day - there is nothing we’d change and we will be 100% booking in for next year when your diary opens up again!” - Eve

“Had a lovely morning at this relaxed session making a tied Spring flower bouquet. Quality flowers to use, good instruction and very pleased with the results which are still going strong. Also enjoyed the coffee and cake provided!” - Yvonne

Discovering a Love of Teaching

One of the most rewarding parts of my journey has been teaching floristry workshops.

What started as a handful of seasonal sessions has grown into a programme of workshops enjoyed by people from across the North East. From spring arrangements and summer flowers to autumn wreaths and festive creations, I love helping people discover their own creativity through flowers.

Many guests arrive feeling nervous or convinced they aren't creative, only to leave with a beautiful arrangement and a renewed sense of confidence. Creating welcoming, relaxed workshops where everyone feels comfortable is something I care deeply about.

Whether you're completely new to floristry or simply looking for a creative escape, my workshops are designed to be inspiring, enjoyable and accessible to all.

Sharing Flowers in Beautiful Places

A significant chapter in The Northern Flower Garden's story has been the opportunity to work with National Trust properties across the North East. Being trusted to deliver my workshops at these properties has been one of the proudest milestones in my journey.

Hosting workshops at Gibside, Crook Hall Gardens and Souter Lighthouse has allowed me to bring seasonal floristry experiences to new audiences while celebrating the natural beauty that inspires so much of my work.

These partnerships have helped The Northern Flower Garden grow beyond what I ever imagined and have connected me with a wonderful community of flower lovers from Newcastle, Durham, Sunderland, South Shields and beyond.

A New Name, The Same Heart

As the business has grown, so too has my vision. What began as The Northern Flower Garden has blossomed into a creative studio where people can gather to learn, celebrate and connect through flowers. The move to Whitburn felt like the perfect time to embrace this exciting new chapter, and The Northern Flower Studio reflects the creative home I've always dreamed of building.

Having a permanent studio has long been a dream of mine, and I'm delighted to finally have a place where people can come together to learn, create and celebrate flowers throughout the year.

The studio will allow me to expand my programme of seasonal workshops, offer more private group experiences and introduce new learning opportunities, including Floristry Fundamentals, a course designed to help beginners develop their skills, confidence and understanding of the elements and principles that underpin floristry.

Looking ahead, I'm also excited to introduce workshops for couples and wedding parties who would like to create some of their own wedding flowers, with as much (or as little) professional support as they need to bring their ideas to life. If you're planning your special day, you can find out more here:

More than anything, The Northern Flower Studio is a place for creativity, connection and sharing a love of flowers. I hope it becomes somewhere people return to throughout the seasons, to learn something new, celebrate life's special moments and discover the confidence to create with flowers.

Looking Ahead

As The Northern Flower Studio continues to grow, my hope is that it becomes a place where people return time and again, to learn new skills, celebrate life's milestones, discover their creativity and enjoy the beauty of seasonal flowers together.

From wedding celebrations to creative workshops, I feel privileged to play a small part in some of life's most memorable moments.

I can't wait to welcome you to The Northern Flower Studio. Whether you're joining your very first workshop, planning your wedding flowers or simply stopping by to say hello, I hope you'll feel inspired to discover the joy of creating with flowers.
